Archaeological testing of a proposed extension to an existing dwelling at Knowth, Co. Meath, was carried out in August 1996. The site lies close to the large passage tomb cemetery of Knowth and is in an area designated in the County Development Plan as being of archaeological interest. Three cuttings were opened on this site in the area to the east of the existing dwelling and they revealed that no significant archaeological deposits were present. Natural boulder clay was encountered in each of the three trenches at a consistent depth of 1.05m below present ground level. The unusual depth of topsoil on this site would suggest that some of this ground may have been made up over the years, and the lack of any finds from the excavated trenches is unusual.
