Archaeological testing was required as a condition of planning permission on this site, which is located some 40–50m east of the tower of the church of the Grey or Franciscan friary situated at the corner of Mill Street and Castle Road.

The line of the foundation trenches was tested; human bone was exposed in the natural gravel which underlay 600mm of garden soil. Articulated and disarticulated burials were present. There was no evidence to indicate their date. In order to avoid disturbing the burials, the foundation trenches for the outside walls were excavated only to the bottom of the garden soil layer; two burials were exposed in one area crossing the trench. These were ‘bridged’ using steel and blocks so that they could be left in situ. Reduction of the interior of the house was not required as concrete slabs were laid to span the side walls.
