The site was assessed in September 1996 prior to development. It was a long, narrow property facing onto West Street, one of the medieval thoroughfares of the city. Two trenches were cut, one from the front, and the other from the back. The rear trench cut through the backyard of a recently demolished house, exposing natural sands and gravel almost up to surface level. The front trench exposed a basement under the house, cut into the natural sand and gravel, retained by red brick, and filled with rubble. A limited stretch of brown sandy soil between the basement wall and the facade suggested the existence of extant deposits prior to its construction. The paucity of the archaeological deposits, however, militated against any further investigation.
