Archaeological monitoring of proposed alterations to a licensed premises at Sunday’s Gate, Drogheda, was carried out in February 1996. The site stands immediately to the east of the site of Sunday’s Gate, which was demolished by the Corporation in 1795, and the town walls appear to have skirted the present development site on the south side.

Monitoring was carried out in all trenches associated with the alterations to the building. Natural boulder clay was discovered within 0.45m of present ground level towards the south end of the site. The only layers discovered above the boulder clay would seem to be of fairly recent date. Further north, post-medieval layers were discovered and are probably associated with earlier houses which stood on the same line as the present building.
