Pre-development site assessment of a small site on the south bank of the River Boyne was carried out in late November 1996. Seven test-trenches were excavated by mechanical digger. The site was subject to waterlogging owing to tidal occurrences. In three test-trenches archaeological deposits containing medieval pottery of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century date were recorded at depths of between 1.8m and 2.3m below present street level. The deposits were dark brown to black in colour and were composed of predominantly decayed organic material. Only the surface of the deposit was removed; hence the full depth of this deposit remains unknown.
The type of deposit uncovered on this site bears close parallels to deposits identified in John Street in 1976 and also in other areas in Drogheda. No further excavation of the site was required by the developer.
