Archaeological testing of a proposed housing development at Greenlanes, Drogheda, was carried out in September 1996. The site lies to the south side of Greenlanes, which is a medieval street, reference being made to it in three fourteenth-century deeds. Two test-trenches were excavated. An examination of these trenches indicated that the site was disturbed right down to the natural boulder clay. Any cuts into the natural appear to be quite recent, one being for a water-pipe and the other machine cuts. The finds from the site indicate a continuum of activity from the medieval period right up to post-medieval times. However, it is also possible, as the land is marshy here, that the ground has been built up, with material having been introduced to the site. No clear picture can be obtained from this site as it is very disturbed.
