Archaeological testing of a proposed development at Dundalk Street/Market Square, Carlingford, was carried out in September 1996. Two test-trenches were excavated in the area to be disturbed. An examination of these trenches indicates that the site is disturbed almost right down to the natural sands and gravels.

The fill of the trenches consisted of the disturbed material associated with the demolition of previous structures that existed on the site. The natural sands and gravels were exposed at a consistent depth of 1m in both trenches.

In general the finds from the site indicate a post-medieval date for any activity. However, a single late medieval sherd was recovered from a 0.2m-thick layer in one of the trenches. This layer was directly above the natural sands. No other features were present in either of the trenches.
