Archaeological testing of a proposed housing development to the west of Dundalk Street, Carlingford, was carried out in October 1996. The probable line of the town wall runs along the west side of the site. It was proposed to construct a number of houses and an access road.

Six trenches were excavated. The area is known to have been marshy in previous times and it would appear from the testing that there is quite an amount of made-up ground. No structures or features of any significance were noted in any of the trenches with the exception of a small area of burning at the west end of one of them. This sat directly on the natural boulder clay but its extent was quite limited and it produced no finds, and may not be archaeologically significant.
