Archaeological monitoring of an extension to an existing house was carried out at Backlane, Carlingford, Co. Louth. The site lies within an area of archaeological potential as outilned in the Urban Archaeological Survey of County Louth. It is inside the line of the town wall and along two streets, and was surely an early burgage plot. However, monitoring of the foundation trenches revealed that no archaeological deposits were present and the natural boulder clay was exposed quite close to the surface. Judging by the proximity of the boulder clay to the surface, it is unlikely that significant medieval deposits ever existed on this site.
