Two test-trenches were excavated by JCB to the rear of 8 William Street in the area of the proposed development. The earliest feature identified was a possible ditch, 6m wide, containing thirteenth-century pottery. This ditch would have been a substantial land division. A smaller pair of ditches, c. 1m wide, on the same alignment, 9m apart, probably represent plot divisions of a slightly later date. Medieval pits, one containing thirteenth-century pottery, were probably associated with the pair of ditches, but there was no sign of contemporary buildings in the excavated area. Recent disturbance has damaged medieval deposits at the northern end of the site and beyond towards William Street. Approximately 1.7m of imported garden soil sealed the medieval deposits.
