An archaeological assessment was carried out on the site of a proposed development at Slieve na Mon, Greensbridge Street,Kilkenny. The site lies within the zone of archaeological potential for Kilkenny, as identified by the Urban Archaeological Survey. The assessment sought to ascertain the nature of the archaeological material relating to the mill-stream and/or the watermills at Greensbridge to fulfil a condition of the planning approval for the scheme.

Two trial-trenches, orientated north-south, were opened by mechanical excavator on 29 May 1996. Trench 1 was 4.8m long and Trench 2 was 1.8m long; the trenches were separated by a wall foundation. Excavation halted at a depth of between 1.3m and 1.4m in both trenches when the depth exceeded that of the proposed foundations. The deposits revealed represented the backfilling of construction trenches for the boundary wall and for the existing wall foundations.

Assessment of the site by test-trenching did not reveal any material of archaeological significance and there were no further archaeological requirements for the development.
