During the monitoring operation begun in November 1995, a spread of charcoal-rich material was discovered. It was approx. 20m in diameter and contained numerous burnt stones and charcoal fragments. It appeared to overlie a layer of white marl formed by an ancient turlough.

Excavation revealed four pits, each about 1.5m in diameter and 0.5m deep. These were filled with the same charcoal-rich material. During excavation, rainwater filled two of these pits and, owing to their clay edges, did not drain away. This may explain why no evidence of a stone- or wood-lined trough was found. However, no hearth was found, nor were any datable artefacts.
