Trial-trenching was carried out on 29 June 1996 in compliance with a request from the local authority and the National Monuments Service. The proposed development consists of the conversion of an existing coach-house to apartment use, with two single-storey extensions to the rear. It was in this rear area that the present evaluation was undertaken.

Two trenches, with a combined length of 38.5m, were excavated by machine and revealed relatively undisturbed uniform soil layers. No features or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered. Previous testing in the southern area of the site (Excavations 1995, 42) produced similar results.

The archaeologically sterile nature of the stratigraphy in this general area indicates that it is likely that any subsurface archaeological deposits which exist in this area of the town will be encountered nearer to Duke Street, on the northern end of the site.
