Test-trenching was undertaken at the site of a proposed hostel on 1 April 1996 in response to a request from the developers. Eight separate trenches, with a combined length of 58.5m, were excavated by machine in an attempt to determine the nature and extent of any archaeological features which might exist within the confines of the site. Despite close monitoring of the excavated material and detailed examination of the section faces, no features or finds of archaeological significance were uncovered, save for a number of clay pipe fragments, the majority of which were recovered from the basal layer overlying the sterile ‘natural’.
The proposed building will require a raft-foundation. All groundwork associated with the development will be under-taken under archaeological supervision in early 1997.
