In advance of development at Blake’s Tower, Galway, a photographic survey was undertaken by the writer and a report was compiled, outlining the potential impact of the proposed development on the medieval architecture of the site. As a result, the National Monuments Service recommended that, as the main impact of the development on the original fabric of Blake’s Tower would be on the proposed unblocking of two currently sealed medieval opes and the rendering or removal of render from the walls, these renovations should be monitored by a licensed archaeologist. To date this work has not been carried out, as structural developments in other areas of the site have been under way.
