Pre-development testing, in the form of trial-trenching, was carried out here on 15 October 1996 in advance of the construction of eight townhouses. This was carried out in compliance with planning conditions made by the Planning Section of Galway County Council.
The site, although not located within the original medieval wall of the city, is within Bradley and Dunne’s zone of archaeological significance. Indeed, this area would have been a suburb of the city, its foundation probably dating to before 1500.
Two trenches were excavated by a mechanical digger during the course of the testing. These revealed a rubble fill, an organic fill, a layer of cobblestones, natural subsoil and bedrock. Finds included modern pottery sherds, a spud stone, red brick fragments, oyster and mussel shells. No undisturbed archaeological deposits were in evidence. It seems probable that this area was filled in during the last 200 years.
