In compliance with the relevant condition of the planning permission, a programme of archaeological testing was carried out on the site of the proposed development during August 1996.

A single test-trench was opened by hand along the long axis of the area designated for development. This trench extended from the open area-way behind the existing Georgian building into the area of cellarage, for a total distance of over 8m. The trench was opened to a minimum width of 0.5m and was dug to an average depth of 0.7m, sufficient to reveal the underlying undisturbed natural deposits. These consisted mainly of natural boulder clay, but towards the south-west end of the trench a deposit of dark silty clay was revealed overlying the boulder clay.

No archaeological features or artefactual material were revealed and in no case were deposits of archaeological significance encountered. Thus this site may be considered as having been archaeologically resolved.
