Archaeological testing of a proposed commercial development at 59–62 Drury Street, Dublin, was carried out in January 1996. The site, though outside the zone of archaeological potential, is quite close to a possible Early Christian enclosure and the site of St Mary de Hogges (Dublin City Development Plan 1991). The proposed development would incorporate a basement, resulting in the removal of up to 4m of material over the entire site.

It was decided to excavate six trenches in order to adequately assess the archaeological significance of any deposits uncovered. Examination of the trenches revealed the foundation walls of relatively recent buildings, basements and industrial pipes. A ditch-like feature was uncovered to the west of the site, running parallel to Drury Street. It was cut into the natural boulder clay and the bottom of it was exposed at a depth of 2.2m. The fill of the ditch was grey/black silt and was completely sterile, suggesting that it might be a natural feature. No significant features were uncovered on the site and there was no evidence for medieval deposits.
