A trial excavation took place in December 1996 prior to development of the premises. Though there are no documented archaeological sites relating directly to the site, it is situated on the east bank of the Poddle, where medieval settlement would be expected, outside the city walls and in close proximity to the medieval parish church of St Andrew.

Three trial-trenches were cut in this small area, yielding dark, organic, silty soil below the rubble layer. Natural was located at about 1.27m below basement level. No finds or features came to light in two of the trenches, but a wall, which may have been a drain, came to light in the third trench. Medieval pottery of probable twelfth- and thirteenth-century date was also found in this trench, but was not clearly related to the wall. Monitoring, particularly in the area of the wall feature, was recommended for the construction phase.
