An archaeological assessment was carried out on a site at 2 Crane Lane, Dublin 2, in the basement of the existing building. The assessment was based on a series of four trenches opened by hand. The site lies outside the Anglo-Norman city wall. The name 'Crane Lane' is taken from the public crane which was placed on the Old Custom House Quay at the end of this street. Crane Lane was laid down c. 1620, while the western side was built in 1762.
Four trenches were excavated which had an identical soil profile, consisting of a 1.4m depth of loose masonry over a pure silt deposit. No finds were retrieved from the excavation.
This assessment produced no archaeological material of a structural or artefactual nature.
