An archaeological assessment was carried out on 4 and 11 April 1996 on a development site located at the western corner of North Brunswick Street and Red Cow Lane to fulfil a requirement of the planning condition. Seven test-trenches were opened by mechanical excavator across the site, which measured 48m north-south and 52m east-west. A series of foundation and cellar walls was revealed in the trenches opened; these included red brick walls and a red brick arch in Trench 3. Two post-medieval pits were revealed in Trench 1.
The site appeared to have been disturbed by the foundations of previous developments to a depth of 3–4m below present ground level. No archaeological material was encountered and there were no further archaeological requirements for the development.
