Trial-trenching was carried out at the site of this development on 6 September 1996 in compliance with planning conditions set out by Donegal County Council. The development consisted of the construction of a private dwelling, driveway, septic rank and percolation area, located in Creevy townland, 2.5 miles north-west of the town of Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal.
The site was located adjacent to an enclosure, marked on the first edition of the OS 6" sheet as 'Park Fort'. Located in a field of rough grazing with good views of the Atlantic Ocean, this enclosure had been levelled in the past, its outline now barely visible.
The private dwelling was to be located 10m north-east of the site of the enclosure. That area of the development closest to the site was trenched using a JCB. The trench was excavated in three sections, totalling 47m in length, 0.9–1m in width and 0.6–1m in depth. The stratigraphy encountered consisted of topsoil, underlying disturbed subsoil, a rubbish fill and natural subsoil. The only archaeological evidence consisted of a small lens of burnt soil and charcoal, located 2m along the third section of the trench, within the subsoil. It measured 0.3m in length, 0.3m in width and less than 0.1m in thickness. Also recovered from the subsoil was a stray find of black-ware.
