The site of a proposed dam embankment in the Little Mealagh Valley, Bantry, was located in the vicinity of a small ringfort at Glanbannoc Lower. An archaeological assessment was carried out on 11 November 1996.

Mechanical excavation of four approximately east-west trenches down to natural clay subsoil was undertaken along the line of the dam footprint, which skirted the monument to the east as close as 15m at one point. The stratigraphy of all four trenches was indicative of geological formation and deposition of soils and clays. No archaeological features or soils were present within the excavated areas and no finds were retrieved.
