The line of the medieval city wall was exposed, between 0.2m and 0.6m below the present ground level, and the external wall face was relatively straight to the maximum excavated depth (2m). The internal wall face was not excavated as it lay outside the development area. It is likely that a foundation plinth exists below this level and this may project eastwards for up to 0.75m. The upper 1.8m of fill on the east side of the wall was of modern origin and below this was the top of the medieval levels, which were the result of extramural dumping. No datable finds were recovered from these black organic layers. The line of the city wall curves in the section exposed on the excavation.
