Archaeological testing of the site of a proposed holiday home village at Dough, Lahinch, Co. Clare, was carried out in July 1996. The site is in the vicinity of an earthwork enclosure identified in the Sires and Monuments Record for County Clare. Four cuttings were opened on the site in the area to the south of the earthwork, where it was thought that associated settlement may have existed. All four trenches were excavated by hand to the natural boulder clay. The low bank running from the north-west across the field to the south-east corner appears to be a natural feature; the bank did not consist of redeposited material and there was no evidence for a ditch outside. It appears unlikely that significant stratified deposits exist between the low bank and the earthwork itself. It is highly likely that any features that may have occurred have been ploughed out.
