In late May 1996 the discovery of an inhumation burial was reported to the NMI by the Garda Síochána at Carlow. The skeleton had been found a number of years previously but was only reported to the Gardaí in 1996. It was discovered when a field boundary was being removed and replaced with a fence. The burial was left in situ, and the fence-post was relocated. The burial was in the townland of Aghnanure, north Co. Carlow,42 close to the border between counties Carlow, Laois and Kildare. It was found underneath a field boundary a few metres south of the River Lerr, which, along with the River Barrow, forms the boundary between the three counties. The site lay at an altitude of 50–60m above sea level. No burials or other sites are known from the townland. According to the finder, the burial was covered with a layer of stones, but it is possible that these formed the basal layer of the field fence. The position of the skeleton was not recorded.
