An exploratory trench, 2m x 2m, was opened up against the south-east wall of this seventeenth-century building to ascertain the original floor level and to determine the archaeological potential of the site. The base of a basalt and mortar pillar rested on the subsoil, as did the walls of the building. The subsoil was overlain by sand and clay containing seventeenth-century pottery, sealed by a layer of loam and mortar containing roofing slates, seashells and artefacts datable to the eighteenth or nineteenth century. This layer was in turn covered by rough cobbles, which were sealed by modern overburden.
