The site lay north-east of Wexford town and well beyond the extent of the old walled medieval town. While it was known that the land here had been reclaimed over the last few centuries, there was the possibility of underlying archaeology in the form of an old ferry point.

Modern drainage channels cut into the soft marshy ground along its northern and southern limits. One very long slit- trench and ten test-pits were opened up. The stratigraphy was relatively constant throughout the site, though the depth of infill material varied, becoming deeper to the east of the site.

The uppermost layer was a brown peaty blanket which overlay 19th-century dumped material, black coarse loose soil within a peaty matrix.

Finds from this layer include red brick, glass, ceramic bottles and flowerpots. This layer represented an intensive attempt to raise the level of the land. It was unsuccessful, however, and the area was reclaimed by the marsh. Below the 19th-century dumped material lay the natural silty clays.

There was no indication of worked timbers to suggest the location of the old ferry point.
