On 27 June the mechanical excavation of a trench measuring 17m x 3m was monitored outside the town wall between the West Gate and Georges St. (Excavation of a sump within the area was previously recorded by Joanna Wren.) The excavation did not disturb any medieval material. It cut post-medieval deposits accumulated against the town wall. A blocked doorway was exposed in a square tower. It appeared to pass through the wall obliquely, and was probably inserted in the 18th century.
