Four cuttings were opened in the centre of Mullingar for the purpose of laying Telecom Éireann cables under the street. Archaeological monitoring took place because of an earlier find of human remains, probably mediaeval, in Austin Friars St. Three of these cuttings were in the centre of the area of medieval settlement; the other was on the periphery but was near where the earlier finds had taken place.
Little of significance was uncovered. A small deposit of reddish-brown soil with flecks of charcoal and shell fragments, which could represent redeposited habitation material, was found in Pearse St., and some post-medieval pottery was found in Austin Friars St.
