An archaeological watching brief was carried out on a site of a proposed residential development at Louth Village in September 1995. The site lies within an area of archaeological potential as outlined in the Urban Archaeology Survey of County Louth. Extensive soil removal was undertaken prior to the excavation of foundation trenches. An old stone house previously existed on the site and had been partially demolished in recent times. At the centre of the site an area of black ash measuring approx. 2m by 4.5m was exposed when about 1m of topsoil had been removed. This was obviously associated with the pre-existing house as it contained sherds of modern crockery. At the north-eastern end of the site a stone drain was uncovered. It was 0.4m below topsoil and cut into the natural boulder clay. It had a mortar-lined base and was capped with large flagstones measuring 0.5m by 0.8m. No secure dating evidence was obtained for the drain but it was likely to be post-medieval in date. This is the only feature that has survived on the site and it is only in this area that disturbance has not taken place. Elsewhere archaeological stratigraphy did not survive and boulder clay was exposed.
