An archaeological assessment was carried out at Tippings House, Roden Place, Dundalk, on 8 April 1995 in response to an archaeological condition attached to planning permission for a proposed residential development on the site. The site, which lies on the north side of Francis St., was previously occupied by the Tippings House/Douglas Place building, which was demolished prior to the assessment. An initial inspection of the site revealed the fact that the previous building contained basements and natural boulder clay was exposed over the entire site. It appeared that the original basement had been cut into 3m of made-up ground on the eastern side which included archaeological deposits. As the foundation trenches for the proposed building were along the exact lines of the previous foundations, there was no effect on surviving archaeological deposits to the east, which will remain within the front garden.
