The site assessment took place in July 1995. The proposed development consisted of an 8m southward extension to the existing building. It was to be in the form of a single-storey timber-framed structure, which was to be constructed on a concrete raft foundation. Apart from one service trench, running south from the existing building, no ground disturbance was to occur beyond 4.6m OD, or 0.15m below present ground level.
The assessment took the form of a single trench running south from the existing building. Immediately beneath the concrete slabs and associated sand was some 0.3m of rubble and modern soil infill. Beneath this again was a layer of cobbles, presumably representing the backyard of the original structure. The cobbles were associated with a red brick wall which ran from east to west across the trench and marked the back wall of an earlier plot.
The cobbles and wall were truncated by a later service trench which linked up to an existing manhole, located beyond the proposed development area.
Nothing further of archaeological significance was noted.
