Test-trenching on a site for a house located 80m north-west of King John's Castle, Carlingford, revealed that up to 1.9m of rubble of late 19th- or early 20th-century date had been used to level up the site. Brown clay under the rubble also contained pottery of modern date and excavation stopped at a depth of 2.2m without reaching natural subsoil.
