Archaeological test-trenching was undertaken on behalf of Bord Gais Éireann to assess the route of a proposed gas pipeline at the southern end of Naas town which cuts into the western limit of the zone of archaeological potential as defined by the Office of Public Works. The assessment was carried out in advance of pipe-laying to ensure that no features of archaeological importance would be either disturbed or destroyed by the work.
The assessment was based on inspection of five test-trenches. No features or soils of archaeological potential were noted in any of the test-pits examined. It is thought that the pipeline lay well outside the archaeological area surrounding the supposed site of the South Motte. It was considered that the pipe- laying would neither expose nor damage any features of archaeological interest in this location.
