Archaeological monitoring of sewer-pipe replacement was conducted at Canal St., Naas, over a four-day period in December 1995 on behalf of Naas UDC. The machine-excavated trench to accommodate the sewer-pipe was on average 1.83m wide, 1.83m deep and 37.5m in length. Soil conditions in the trench were of a disturbed nature with a mixture of gravel, stones and tarmac fragments. A pre-existing stone culvert accommodating a clear water stream was uncovered in part of the trench. It had been roofed with stone lintel slabs and the side walls were, in part, composed of rounded water-rolled stones. Part of the culvert, oriented east-west, was removed to accommodate the laying of the sewer. The date of the original construction of the culvert is unknown. No other material of significance was uncovered during this monitoring project.
It is important to note that this sewer replacement work was located at the western part of Canal St. and did not encroach upon the mid-section of the street where it has been suggested that the town wall may have crossed it (Urban Archaeological Survey, OPW).
