An archaeological assessment of the proposed Phase 1 4-bar gas pipeline route in Maynooth town was carried out on behalf of Bord Gais Éireann to ensure that no features of archaeological importance would be either disturbed or destroyed by the work. The route lies within the zone of archaeological potential as defined by the Office of Public Works. The pipe-laying involved the excavation of a trench generally 450mm wide and 1m deep.
The assessment was based on inspection of seven machine-excavated test-trenches. No features were noted apart from a buried, cobbled road surface, noted in two trenches, indicating a continuity in the location and use of the street. It was not possible to date this surface. No other soils or deposits of archaeological potential were noted and the construction of this proposed pipeline will not disturb features of archaeological interest apart from the cobbles.
