The archaeological test-trenching took place here over a period of two days commencing on 18 December 1995. The testing was undertaken as part of the archaeological investigations on the Celbridge Sewerage Scheme to investigate the impact of the proposed renovations on the sewerage system along Main St. The location of the trenches was decided upon in agreement with the Kildare County Council, taking cognisance of three separate factors:
1. to assess any archaeological remains along the line of the proposed sewerage;
2. to avoid disrupting the traffic flow in Celbridge;
3. to avoid disturbing any of the existing utilities and service pipes.
On the basis of these criteria three trenches were dug along the line of Main St.
In the course of testing neither features nor artefacts of archaeological significance were recovered. Rather the features illustrated the disturbance which this area has undergone owing to the laying of pipes, box-drains, water mains etc. These activities have removed any evidence of archaeological activity within the areas of testing. Despite the lack of archaeological evidence it was recommended that monitoring should be undertaken during all subsequent development, with a provision for excavation and recording should any archaeology be identified.
