Excavation in advance of conservation works took place over a fourteen-week period between May and September 1995. The work again concentrated on the Lower Monks' Garden. The excavation at the eastern end of the garden was extended westward in order to allow a retaining wall to be built to support St Michael's Church and to facilitate conservation works on the outer wall of the garden. During the excavation a small amount of 13th-century or earlier stratigraphy was uncovered in the cutting for the retaining wall; it is hoped to extend this work in 1996.
