A rescue excavation was carried out on this site in advance of pipe-laying associated with the Tuam Regional Water Supply Scheme. Work was commissioned by Galway County Council and the excavation was carried out between 18 January and 8 February 1995.
The mechanical digger, while removing topsoil, uncovered a spread of burnt soil. It was decided to fully excavate the area to establish the extent of this burnt deposit. A trench measuring 6m north-east/south-west by 4.5m north-west/south-east was opened. The excavation revealed a burnt mound measuring 1.4m north-east/south-west by 1.6m north-west /south-east which was delimited by small stones. No artefacts of archaeological significance were noted.
