Archaeological test-trenching was undertaken to fulfil the condition of the planning approval on a portion of a large site which is to be redeveloped by Arnott's Plc. The site is located some 400m to the east of the Mary's Abbey complex.
Ten test-pits were opened on the Liffey St. site, which is bounded by Proby's Lane on the north and the Hotel Yard on the south. None produced any evidence of archaeological soils or features. The testing indicated that the old ground level had been removed across the entire Liffey St. site. The earliest deposits on the site date from the late 17th century.
It is unlikely that the remainder of the site may possess significant or extensive archaeological features and soils. The Phase 2 portion of the development site fronting onto Abbey St. will be subject to test-trenching once demolition and site clearance has taken place.
