Monitoring was carried out in an area of a recently demolished building at the junction of George's Hill and Cuckoo Lane. The site lies within the zone of archaeological interest, being within the medieval suburb of Oxmantown. Monitoring began in September 1995 and was still ongoing at time of writing, though near completion.
The area itself is badly disturbed with infilled old basements and vaulted cellars. The natural gravels appear 1m below present ground surface and the foundation trenches very often extend to 2m+, therefore any surviving archaeological activity would be seen in section. So far all activity recorded has been late post-medieval, with no evidence to suggest that medieval activity took place in the area currently being examined.
