The site lies outside the medieval town of Dublin but within an area where medieval occupation and farming took place. Francis St. originated in the 12th century, before the friary which gave it its later name was built.
The site covered a large area on the western side of the southern end of Francis St. Occupied buildings covered most of the site. As a result only a preliminary phase of assessment could be undertaken. Two boreholes were monitored but showed that in both these locations subsoil directly underlay the solid floor. Further assessment will be required before development is undertaken.
