Trial-trenching took place on 27-28/10/1995 on the site, at present a yard adjacent to the Hibernian Hotel, Eastmoreland Place, Dublin. The site is proposed for development as an extension to the Hibernian Hotel. The reason for the archaeological assessment was that the site is thought to have been close to Baggotrath Castle, which was demolished in the very early 19th century, prior to the issue of the first edition Ordnance Survey maps. It was then (at the time of its demolition) in a very ruined condition and its exact position, though probably close to Eastmoreland Place, is not clearly recorded. Though it is more likely that Baggotrath Castle was sited further eastwards, probably opposite Wellington Rd on Pembroke Rd, the development site was close enough to the area of archaeological potential to warrant some testing for medieval, or later, remains relating to the castle.

No finds, structures, features or layers of archaeological significance were found. Though there was a thick, dark, seemingly quite organic layer, between natural subsoil and ground level, this was not associated with structures or features of any kind. Much charcoal, bone and 17th/18th-century pottery was found at all levels of this layer, including the base. The area may therefore have been a waste ground or cesspit area in the 17th/18th century.
