Archaeological test-trenching took place on 22 and 25 April 1995. This was carried out prior to planning permission being obtained to develop the site. The site lies outside the medieval walled area of Dublin, but is still within an archaeologically sensitive area.
Three trial-trenches were opened up across the site and excavated down to subsoil levels. Trenches 2 and 3 produced finds of post-medieval pottery, clay pipes and animal bone.
Trench 1 contained four sherds of medieval pottery. These came from a layer of dark grey clay approx. 0.5m deep which was directly overlying undisturbed subsoil. Shell fragments and charcoal flecks were also noted in this layer, but no associated medieval features or structures were observed. In the event of development on the site, a system of archaeological monitoring and manual excavation is envisaged.
