The archaeological test-trenching took place in Clondalkin over a period of three days commencing on 5 August 1995. The testing was undertaken as part of the archaeological investigations on the Tower Rd. redevelopment programme. The reason for the testing was to investigate the archaeological impact of the proposed redevelopment of Tower Rd. as it goes through the early medieval monastery in Clondalkin and is adjacent to the round tower. In agreement with the Office of Public Works and the developer, it was decided that a 10m-long, 1m-wide trench would be sufficient to establish the presence or absence of archaeological deposits within the development area. The depth of the trench was to be determined by cutting into natural deposits.
The trial-trenching produced neither archaeological features nor artefacts. Rather the features reflect the activity which has taken place within recent years, with regard to previous drainage works and also with regard to the laying of the services pipe. There was no objection to development works taking place although, given the proximity of the round tower and the church grounds, it was decided to recommend continuous monitoring.
