Archaeological test-trenching was carried out on the site of a proposed development at the 'Island Site', Chapelizod, for the purposes of a planning submission for the redevelopment of the site. The site is located within the village of Chapelizod, on the banks of the River Liffey, and forms the southern boundary with a large millrace. The site lies within the zone of archaeological potential as defined in the County Development Plan and the OPW Urban Archaeological Survey.
Two pits were opened out of a total of thirteen attempted. Pit 1 located gravel deposits associated with an early line of the river which were archaeologically sterile 1.2m below present ground surface. Pit 5 penetrated below the concrete surface in the yard and exposed a series of walls and a second slab floor, 0.72m below the present ground surface.
The shallow nature of the deposits revealed in Pit 1 indicates that there was no deep archaeological stratigraphy on the site. Further archaeological evaluation of the site awaits the completion of site clearance works.
