An archaeological assessment was required under the conditions of the planning approval for a small extension to a shop at a petrol filling station on Chapelizod Rd., Chapelizod, Dublin 20.
The site lies within the zone of archaeological potential as defined by the OPW Urban Archaeological Survey and in the City Development Plan. The site is located at least 350m from the core of the early settlement at Chapelizod.
There is no documented evidence for prehistoric activity in the immediate vicinity of Chapelizod. The closest evidence for prehistoric settlement occurs in the Phoenix Park, where cist burials of Bronze Age date were discovered during the 19th century. Early medieval and Viking activity is known further east along the Liffey and towards Dublin city.
One pit was excavated to a depth of 2.8m to reveal a deep layer of rubble fill which is thought to run beneath the entire site. The soil encountered in the test-pit is of 18th/19th-century date with no archaeological soils or inclusions. There were no archaeological implications for the development.
