The site is located on a headland that has been historically linked to a late Iron Age tribe, the Éraínn. The eastern section of the headland was extensively reclaimed in the mid-1970s. Prior to the development, local information suggested that some prehistoric settlement sites remained undisturbed. All topsoil removal was monitored and no archaeological features or finds were uncovered. Geophysical prospection was also undertaken in a selected area of the promontory. The results showed 'little of archaeological interest' and anomalies of geological rather than archaeological origin.
