Following a request by the developer to monitor the foundations as required by the planning permission, it was agreed that test-cuttings be carried out instead. On arrival it was found that five trial-pits had been dug around the site the previous day for engineering purposes. The writer supervised the digging of a further two cuttings. Cuts 1–5 were all located around the edge of the site. The sections were examined for archaeological material, but in all five the fill overlying the natural gravel appeared to be late. The remaining two cuttings were dug parallel to one another down the centre of the site, extending north-south.
No archaeological deposits were noted in any of the cuts, but four large fragments of worked stone were recovered. These seemed to be from the same object. The flat upper surface had a slightly raised lip around the outside edge and may have been for channelling water.
